Of course also more powerful databases can be linked, like there are Informix, SQL Server, Oracle, and a lot of others.   Another possible application, for instance, is the connectivity of your internal systems (like e.g. domotica, PLC's) with the outside world by means of for instance an embedded (and maintenance free, possibly ruggedised) box PC, which can be fully adapted with own intelligence to your requirements (contrary to an 'out-of-the-box' router).   This way the world of Internet connectivity opens, safeguarding the all-that-necessary safety.   Due to it's maintenance-friendliness, with the appropriate hardware such a box PC could also be used, e.g., for data-acquisition applications in places that are hard to be accessed.
